Kass Richards’ first ever solo album, The Language Shadow, is out today. Throughout this haunting song set our narrator meditates on the challenges of communication, returning to the theme with an insistence that suggests an emotional necessity; as though only through repeated effort can we break through the fog to speak clearly to ourselves, to our family, and past the mortal divide, to the ghosts whose memory forms us. The result is an album of timeless honesty: a contemporary echo cast north from the Blue Ridge Mountains (where Richards is originally from) up to a cold Canadian city, a candle lit that softly guides a path of reflection. These are songs as gifts that seek to be shared in mournful times.
